How to Calculate Salary Increase Percentage
Subtract the old pay from the new pay, divide the difference by the old pay, and multiply by 100. The denominator is always the old salary—not the new salary.
((new pay − old pay) ÷ old pay) × 100
For $50,000 to $55,000: (($55,000 − $50,000) ÷ $50,000) × 100 = 10%. If old pay is zero, the percentage is not defined because division by zero is impossible.
Use one consistent pay period
Old and new values must use the same period. If you compare monthly with annual pay directly, the result has no useful meaning. This tool annualizes the shared period so you can also see comparable dollar changes.
